Design Deutschland - ICFF New York

At ICFF, the International Contemporary Furniture Fair, from 16 to 19 May 2009 in New York, the German Design Council will be presenting the exhibition Design Deutschland 09 in the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center. On 16 May 2009 a panel discussion will be held on the subject of “German design.” Moreover, the German Design Council is organising a joint presentation of seven German design

brands at ICFF.

Design Deutschland 09 is the latest exhibition to be presented by the German Design Council and will show a thematic cross section of German design, embracing various different product groups. “With Design Deutschland we shall be showing the first comprehensive exhibition of German design in the USA for a long time”, says the Managing Director of the German Design Council, Andrej Kupetz, in happy anticipation.

With over 30,000 visitors from various sectors − interior design and furnishing, architecture and retail − the ICFF in New York is one of the most important trade fairs for interior design. Over the past few years it has developed into the most important business platform for European design in the United States. Design Deutschland 09 will not focus on individual icons of German design, but will instead be seeking the lines of linkage existing between different products − whether in their material, their functionality, or their technology. The title “Design Deutschland” suggests a comprehensive collection of data, the date a snapshot of 2009 − for, given the variety of German design, and its rich history, this show can do no more than that. Like all products in the Design Deutschland series, the exhibition will make no claim to completeness, but will undertake an experiment: that of thoroughly investigating the essential nature of German design through typical instances. Thus the exhibition will illuminate the essence of German design, using selected examples. In this way it will be possible to see a tradition of values in modern German design: design as a solution to Man’s problems.
