The premium award of the German Design Council

Two disciplines, one competition, which differentiates not between communication and product design, but between class and world class. Participating in the 2012 German Design Award means that the entrants are playing on the top. With people who are shaping the future. The competition honors top international achievements that are already setting tomorrow’s standards today. Yet it is not just the entries that are unique, so too are the competition and its independent jury. Internationally renowned ‘experts in excellence’ from both competition disciplines. They honor impressive works, totally impartially. In this they apply a common criterion: For the very best to become standard tomorrow, you have to select something special today.

Scope of the award

The German Design Award is sponsored by the German Design Council. The German Design Award is bestowed in recognition of outstanding achievements in the fields of product design (regular production items from all sectors) and communication design (analogue and digital media, as well as 3D and live communication).

Procedure

The competition is open only to entries that have been nominated for the German Design Award by the German Design Council. There is no restriction on the number of nominations. Only products from the fields of product design and communication design, which have emerged successful from a national competition, from a formal selection procedure (overseen by a panel of experts) or from an international competition, will be accepted for the competition for the German Design Award. At the same time, products or other achievements will be eligible only if they are already available on the market / have already been published at the time of nomination, or were launched no longer than five years previously.

The “German Design Award 2012“ is not to be confused with the award that went by the name of Design Award of the Federal Republic of Germany and was bestowed from 2004 to 2011 by the German Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology.
