German Design Award 2014. Award presentation.
The presentation of the German Design Award 2014 took place on 7 February 2014 within the framework of the international Frankfurt trade fair Ambiente. The expert jury of the German Design Award 2014 evaluated almost 1,900 submissions in 10 different categories and selected 90 works for the Winner award. Ten more products and projects were honored with the Gold award during the award presentation. In addition, the German Design Award Personality has been presented to Gerd Bulthaup, and Christian Zanzotti was honored with the €15,000 Newcomer Award. More information at German Design Award.

German Design Award 2014. Public’s Choice Award.
Until 14 March 2014, people with an interest in design can participate in the online voting for the Public’s Choice Award 2014. All 100 Winners of the 2014 German Design Award are eligible for this distinction. Deutsches Design Museum. Design workshops for school classes.
The Deutsches Design Museum foundation is launching its first project entitled “Pupils discover design” within the framework of the Kinder- und Jugendakademie (academy for children and youths). It aims to familiarize children and youths with design issues, sensitize them and enable them to have their first hands-on experiences with design in a way that is age appropriate. Interior Innovation Award and D3. The winners.
15 products were awarded the Interior Innovation Award – Best of Best 2014 on 12 January 2014 within the framework of imm cologne. In addition, three young international designers each won an award for an outstanding prototype at the [D3] Contest. All of the award winners can currently be seen in an online exhibition. The attorneys of the law firm Vossius & Partner invite to a lecture with a podium discussion in the Vorhoelzer Forum of the Faculty for Architecture in Munich on 26 February 2014 from 5 to 8 p.m. within the framework of the Munich Creative Business Week. Andrej Kupetz, General Manager of the German Design Council, will moderate the event that deals with questions about the protection of designs and brands. Design Research Day 2014. Event.
The Designforschungstag will take place on 20 March 2014 at the Hamburg Chamber of Commerce under the motto “Disruption”. Among the speakers at the “Design Research Day” are: Adrian Ulrich, deputy CEO of the Hamburg Chamber of Commerce; Lutz Dietzold, Managing Director of the German Design Council; Juldou de Raad, Senior Marketing Intelligence Manager, Philips Consumer Lifestyle; Benoit Jacob, head of design of the BMWi sub-brand, and many more. Mia Seeger Preis 2014. Call for entries.
Under the motto “Was mehr als einem nützt” (“What benefits more than one”) the Mia Seeger Preis 2014 for young designers, which is endowed with 10,000 euro, is currently calling for entries. Products and solutions with a strong social focus are wanted. Students and graduates of design courses at German universities can participate in the competition and may apply until 14 March 2014. Hessen Design. Lecture.
On 19 February 2014 at 6 p.m. the lecture Ein Abend mit… (An evening with) Karin Schmidt-Friderichs from the publisher Verlag Hermann Schmidt, Mainz, will take place at Hessen Design in Darmstadt. The IDZ International Design Center Berlin has announced the current themes and dates of its workshop series Design & Company. Young designers and design offices are supported with regard to issues about their professional day-to-day working life with these events. Further details at IDZ.
German Federal Ecodesign Award. Competition.
Until 14 April 2014, companies of all sizes and from all sectors as well as designers can submit their works in the categories products, services, concepts and young talents to the German Federal Ecodesign Award. EuroShop 2014. Trade fair.
The annual EuroShop 2014 trade fair, organized by Messe Düsseldorf in cooperation with the EHI Retail Institute, will take place from 16-20 February 2014 for the 18th time. Almost 2,000 exhibitors from 50 countries and 100,000 professional visitors from 93 countries are expected to attend this year’s trade fair. Das Prinzip Kramer. Exhibition.
The Museum Angewandte Kunst Frankfurt presents the exhibition entitled Das Prinzip Kramer. Design für den variablen Gebrauch. (The Kramer Principle. Design for variable use.) from 6 February to 7 September 2014. More than 100 exhibits comprehensively reflect on Ferdinand Kramer’s work, especially in the field of design. COR Award 2014. The winners.
For the tenth time, the COR Preis Wohnen und Design (COR Award Living and Design) was presented to German language print media and their authors. First place went to Dr. Niklas Maak (Frankfurter Allgemeine Sonntagszeitung) for his article entitled “Stadt der Untoten” (“City of the Undead”). Jan van Rossem (A&W Architektur & Wohnen) follows in second place for the designer portrait “Ronan & Erwan Bouroullec”. More information at COR Preis.
Visiona 2 at the Vitra Design Museum.
In 1970, Verner Panton was commissioned by Bayer AG to design the living landscape Visiona 2, which is considered one of the most radical visions of the future in 20th century design. The Vitra Design Museum presents an accessible reconstruction true to the original in the exhibition Visiona 1970. Revisiting the Future from 7 February to 1 June 2014. More at Vitra Design Museum.
Vitra Design Museum. Special events.
At the occasion of the Lightopia exhibition, which runs until 9 March 2014 at the Vitra Design Museum, the museum has added more special events to the accompanying program. On 13 February 2014 Felix Hallwachs of Little Sun will give a lecture about the project with the same name, which was founded in 2012 in cooperation with the artist Olafur Eliasson and the engineer Fredrik Ottensen. Dutch architect Ben van Berken will speak about the role of light in his projects on 20 February 2014. International experts from various disciplines will discuss the future of light during the symposium Future Light on 28 February 2014. Participation in all events is free of charge. Karl Lagerfeld. Exhibition in Essen.
The Museum Folkwang in Essen presents the exhibition Karl Lagerfeld. Parallel Contrasts. Photography – Books – Fashion from 15 February to 11 May 2014. The exhibition was curated by Gerhard Steidl and Eric Pfrunder in cooperation with Karl Lagerfeld and aims to be a snapshot rather than a retrospective presenting his creative work in fashion, photography, drawings, film, books and product design. The Chanel Legend. Exhibition in Hamburg.
Coco Chanel is considered one of the most prominent couturiers of the 20th century. The Museum für Kunst und Gewerbe Hamburg presents the work of the fashion designer in more than 150 original pieces and investigates the question how the Chanel legend developed and why it continues to this day. FASH European Fashion Award 2014. Results.
In January 2014, the FASH European Fashion Award was presented for the ninth time. The competition organized by the Stiftung Deutsche Bekleidungsindustrie (SDBI, German Fashion Industry Foundation) is one of the most important promotional awards for the fashion industry in the world. In light of the high level of international participation, students and graduates of German academies were able to convince the jury this year. Alvar Aalto Lightings. Exhibition.
The Grand Hornu Image in Belgium presents the exhibition Alvar Aalto Lightings from 9 February to 4 May 2014. In an installation, Aalto’s creations hang and reflect their light in a pontoon suspended over water; in the exhibition’s second part, drawings and documents illustrating the creation of these objects are shown. Playboy Architecture. Exhibition.
In the early issues of Playboy, design objects and modern interior design was already being staged and published. Playboy Architecture 1953-1979 reveals the influence of the magazine on the formulation of the International Style from the 1950s to 1970s with original Playboy magazines, models and furniture. Zukunft ohne Visionen? (Future without visions?) is the title of a talk about automobile design that will take place between Professor Lutz Fügener and Ulf Poschardt on 27 February 2014 at the Pinakothek der Moderne/Die Neue Sammlung in Munich. More information at Die Neue Sammlung.
Typo Berlin. Conference.
This year’s Typo Berlin conference will take place from 15-17 May 2014 under the motto “Roots”. In their lectures, numerous international speakers will discuss the motto, which relates to the sustained values of design. More at Typo Berlin.
Concepts for remote controls. Exhibition.
Usually, every household has several remote controls for different devices. And usually, these remote controls are not very attractive in terms of aesthetics. A student project of the ECAL Lausanne, ENSCI Paris, RCA London and Parsons New York academies dealt with this issue. The exhibition Lazy Bytes presents selected works from the project from 4 February to 2 March 2014 at the Le Lieu du Design in Paris. Further information at Le Lieu du Design.
Marcel Wanders. Exhibition.
With the exhibition Marcel Wanders: Pinned up at the Stedelijk the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam presents what is thus far the most comprehensive one-man show about the Dutch designer until 15 June 2014. Marcel Wanders’ work is honored with more than 400 exhibits from the late 1980s to the present in the fields of product and furniture design, interior design and artistic consulting. The conference Design Indaba takes place from 26-28 February 2014 in Cape Town. It has become one of the most important international design conferences and was able to win numerous speakers from the creative scene for 2014. More information at Design Indaba.
#qved 2014. Editorial Design Conference Munich. Conference.
The Typografische Gesellschaft München organizes the #qved 2014. Editorial Design Conference Munich from 28 February to 2 March 2014. Given the lack of clarity in the magazine and newspaper landscape the conference aims to provide points of orientation for path breaking editorial design and has invited designers, journalists and publishers, who will speak about their extraordinary working methods and present projects. Hermès - Académie des savoir-faire. Lectures on wood.
With its program Académie des savoir-faire the Fondation d’entreprise Hermès promotes craftsmen, artists and designers with the aim to strengthen their skills and employ them for the future. The most beautiful German books 2014. Competition.
Publishers, book designers and manufacturers have until 31 March 2014 to submit their publications to the competition for Die schönsten deutschen Bücher (The most beautiful German books) 2014 award. The Bauhaus Dessau in media coverage. Exhibition.
An exhibition entitled Bewundert, verspottet, gehasst – Das Bauhaus Dessau im Medienecho der 1920er Jahre (Admired, ridiculed, hated – The Bauhaus Dessau in 1920s media coverage) is shown at the Masters’ House Kandinsky/Klee in Dessau from 23 February to 31 May 2014. It presents numerous caricatures, vilifying articles and enthusiastic reports from daily newspapers and specialist magazines of the time as well as advertising and film posters.
