Automotive Brand Contest 2013. Award ceremony.
The awards will be presented to the winners of the Automotive Brand Contest 2013 on 10 September 2013 within the framework of the Automotive Designers’ Night on the first Press Day of the Internationale Automobil-Ausstellung (IAA; International Motor Show) in Frankfurt. The winner of this year’s honorary award “Brand Manager of the Year” will be announced at the occasion, as well. The Automotive Brand Contest offers an effective public platform for comparing and positioning services internationally to companies from the automobile industry, their partners in the suppliers’ industry, design and brand communication as well as import brands. VDA Design Award 2013. Award ceremony.
The winners of this year’s VDA Design Award will be announced on 11 September 2013 within the framework of the Internationale Automobil-Ausstellung (IAA; International Motor Show). The award ceremony will be opened with a discussion round with the chief designers of Audi, BMW, Daimler, Ford and Volkswagen. Andrej Kupetz, General Manager of the German Design Council, will moderate the discussion; after the discussion the awards of the young talents competition will be presented. 5th German Brand and Design Congress. Designing New Markets.
The German Design Council organizes the 5th German Brand and Design Congress on 11-12 November 2013 in Stuttgart. Products and services of German companies are recognized and in demand in international markets and by the global competition. But how fit are German companies when it comes to sustainably claiming their position in the international market? For many companies the task is to create clearly distinguishing features in comparison with the international competitive environment through strategic design and brand policies. Which partners need to be adjusted in which way in order to align brand and design with the appropriate framework conditions of the target markets in the best possible way? D3 Contest 2014. Last call.
The application term for the D3 Contest ends on 25 September 2013. In commission of Koelnmesse, the German Design Council organizes the exhibition and the award for young design at imm cologne 2014, the international interior design trade show, for the eleventh time this year. Up to 20 current works by design students and young designers from all corners of the world will be nominated and shown. Interior Innovation Award 2014. Competition.
The Interior Innovation Award is considered one of the most prestigious design awards in the interior design industry worldwide. Companies can register for the competition until 8 November 2013 with products from the segments furniture, outdoor, bathroom and wellness, office and working place, building equipment, walls, floors, ceilings, kitchen and household, lamps and textiles. imm cologne is the promotional sponsor of the award, which is organized by the German Design Council. Ampelphase 6. Exhibition.
Works by five renowned architectural offices from the Rhein-Main region and Städelschule Frankfurt will be shown in the exhibition series entitled Ampelphase of the Vitra Showroom in Frankfurt am Main from 5-25 September 2013; the theme is “Insights / Outlooks”. More at Ampelphase.
Zumtobel Group Award 2014. Call for submissions.
For the fourth time the Zumtobel Group organizes its architectural award, which is endowed with 140,000 euro and will be presented in the categories “Buildings”, “Urban Developments & Initiatives” and “Applied Innovations”. Architectural and engineering offices, urban and landscape designers, universities, young technology companies, NGOs as well as public and private initiatives can participate. In the past years, the possibilities of designing with and by using light have fundamentally changed and expanded. From 28 September 2013 until 16 March 2014 the exhibition Lightopia at the Vitra Design Museum shows precisely what light can achieve and do today and how designers implement these possibilities by confronting current designs from artists and designers with classic lights from the museum’s collection. Mainz Design Talks. Lectures and discussion.
For the eleventh time the descom-initiated Mainzer Designgespräche take place on 26 September 2013 at the Staatstheater Mainz under the motto “Auf der Suche nach … dem Wert” (“In search of … value”). The expected speakers are Nicola Stattmann and Oliver Stattmann (Stattmann Neue Möbel), Roland Heiler (Porsche Design Studio) and Martin Schweighofer (Zeppelin University). Warum Ecodesign? Exhibition.
From 6 September until 27 October 2013 Hessen Design in Darmstadt presents the exhibition Warum Ecodesign? (Why Ecodesign?). In a double exhibition the German Federal Ecodesign Award and a selection of innovative design products from companies and design offices in the state of Hessen will be presented. On 17 September 2013 the VDID invites you to an afternoon lecture series. Within the framework of the Stuttgart trade fair Composites Europe the conference will deal with the sustainability and multi-functionality of new materials, among other topics. More at VDID.
GUTE GESTALTUNG 14. Competition.
Until 30 September 2013 designers of all disciplines can register their projects and works online for the competition of the Deutscher Designer Club (DDC). The competition entitled Gute Gestaltung (Good Design) is organized annually – this year under the motto “DENKEN. GESTALTEN. ÜBERZEUGEN.” (“THINKING. DESIGNING. CONVINCING.”) Works from all design disciplines from the past two years will be evaluated in eight categories. DDC.
Italy: The New Domestic Landscape. Exhibition.
With the exhibition Environments and Counter Environments. "Italy: The New Domestic Landscape", MoMA 1972 the Graham Foundation in Chicago dedicates itself to the sustained importance of this path-breaking exhibition from the year 1972 from 18 September until 14 December 2013. The current exhibition will not be a reconstruction of the 1972 exhibition curated by Emilio Ambasz, but rather an analytical debate of its visionary ideas and designs for the living environment. The Most Beautiful German Books. Award ceremony.
On 5 September 2013 The Most Beautiful German Books 2013 will be honored at the Museum Angewandte Kunst in Frankfurt; the winner of the “Stiftung Buchkunst Prize”, which is endowed with 10,000 euro, will be announced. Fashion designer Gabriele Strehle will give the laudatory speech for the most beautiful German book. Information and registration at Stiftung Buchkunst.
Gerald Cinamon. Graphic design exhibition.
From 3 September until 6 October 2013 the ICA Institute of Contemporary Art in London presents the exhibition Gerald Cinamon: Collected Works Since 1958. Cinamon became famous especially for his book designs, particularly for Penguin Books, and through other outstanding graphic design works. On 13 September 2013 Gerald Cinamon will speak with David Pearson. More information at ICA.
horgenglarus Chairs. Exhibition.
Until 15 October 2013 the Werkbund Berlin presents an exhibition about the chairs and the production process of the company horenglarus, the oldest chair and table manufacture in Switzerland. The chairs created by the designers Hannes Wettstein, Werner Max Moser, Max Ernst Haefeli and Max Dudler serve as examples. More at Werkbund Berlin.

From 14-22 September 2013 the Victoria & Albert Museum in London presents the installation The Dinner Party / True-to-Life Design by Scholten & Baijings. The real atmosphere of a dinner party allows visitors to directly experience the products created by the Dutch design duo. More information at V&A Museum.
Vintage – Design With a History. Exhibition.
The exhibition Vintage – Design With a History at the Museum für Gestaltung in Zurich from 25 September 2013 until 5 January 2014 aims to show that – and to which extent – products with a past and traces of use have become chic and give rise to new desires. Further details at Museum für Gestaltung.

For the first time in Europe the exhibition alex wollner brasil. design visual shows the work of the renowned graphic designer. His work is strongly influenced by the Ulm Design School – on show at the Museum Angewandte Kunst in Frankfurt from 21 September 2013 until 2 February 2014. More at Museum Angewandte Kunst.
With the exhibition entitled Tattoo the Gewerbemuseum Winterthur dedicates itself to the artistic, handicraft and historical and cultural phenomenon of tattoos from 6 September 2013 until 27 April 2014. The art of tattoos can look back on thousands of years of history and is currently more up-to-date than ever before. Further information at Gewerbemuseum.
Studio Formafantasma. Exhibition.
The Geymüllerschlössel from the Biedermeier period serves as the backdrop for the MAK Museum für Angewandte Kunst’s invitation to contemporary designers, who deal with this location and put it in relation with their own works. From 14 September until 1 December 2013 Studio Formafantasma will seize this opportunity under the motto The Stranger Within. More at MAK Wien.
Alexander Calder in Düsseldorf. Exhibition.
The sculptures and especially mobiles of Alexander Calder have fascinated and inspired designers throughout the decades. The Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen presents a comprehensive exhibition of his oeuvre from 7 September 2013 until 12 January 2014. More at Kunstsammlung.
New York City Graphic Design. Exhibition.
The Herb Lubalin Study Center of Design and Typography at Cooper Gallery presents the exhibition Image of the Studio. A Portrait of New York City Graphic Design from 1-26 October 2013, with work from 75 graphic design studios in the city. More at Cooper Gallery.
Irma Boom. Exhibition.
With her extraordinary book designs the Dutch graphic designer Irma Boom has repeatedly amazed the public. The Institut Néerlandais in Paris presents the exhibition Irma Boom – Architecture of the Book from 18 September until 15 December 2013 and the designer’s first works show in France. Interaction Design. Conference.
The conference The Stuff Between Us: Designing Interactions Beyond the Object aims to investigate the state of affairs in interaction design from 4-5 October 2013 at the Zurich University of the Arts. DAM Model Collection online. Archive.
Since this August the model collection of the Deutsches Architekturmuseum in Frankfurt has been online. In addition to the works archives, lifetime and posthumous bequests, plans, drawings and photographs the DAM also owns almost 1,300 models of designs by international architects. In this archive, interested persons can now do research and, in addition to picture materials, get essential information about the design and model itself. More at DAM Archiv.

German registered design patent law becomes design law. Renaming.
On 26 June 2013 the German Bundestag decided to rename the German registered design patent law (Geschmacksmustergesetz) into design law (Designgesetz). While the German term for the registered design patent (Geschmacksmuster) is well known in expert circles, the majority of people has no or only a vague idea of what it means. The term “design”, which was added to the German dictionary in 1973, is much more familiar. More information at Designgesetz.

The Coburg Connecting Conference 2013 takes place on 9-10 October 2013 at the Kongresshaus Rosengarten Coburg. Leading thinkers and practitioners from various disciplines will discuss the success patterns of a sustainable innovation culture in an offensively constructive way during the two days of the symposium. Every year, the Zumtobel Group prepares its annual report in cooperation with international artists, designers and architects. The current publication was conceived and realized by British architect David Chipperfield and the John Morgan Design studio around the leitmotif “window”. The artfully designed book takes readers through the history of art and photography, in which the window plays a key role. The annual report is available for download or can be ordered at Zumtobel.
Dixonary. Illumination, revelation and post-rationalizations from a chaotic mind.

This book presents a chronology of Tom Dixon’s work. Illustrations of objects that essentially inspired him for a product or project are accompanied by short explanatory texts; in order to shed light on the multitude of designs by Tom Dixon the Dixionary has more than 600 pages. Founded in 2002 by Oki Sato the design studio Nendo from Tokyo has repeatedly set international trends with its numerous products and projects that inspired contemporary designs met with an internationally high recognition.
