Japan Modern Poster

News0Exhibition
An exhibition at Designmuseum Danmark showcases key pieces of Japanese graphic design, demonstrating the impact of poster art on visual culture, social debates, and aesthetic developments since the post-war era.

With the exhibition ‘JAPAN MODERN POSTER’, Designmuseum Danmark will be presenting the rich world of Japanese poster art from 6 February 2026. Visitors can admire an impressive series of iconic posters from Japan that not only inspire reflection but also humorously depict Japan's cultural and historical development from the 1950s to the present day. The show is the largest exhibition in the museum's history dedicated to Japanese poster design.

Poster Culture in Transition

The focus is on the transformation of Japanese poster design over several generations: from the post-war designers who laid the foundations for modern poster culture under difficult social conditions, to the designers who gained international recognition during the economic boom of the 1960s, to the new generation that brought new values and experimental approaches to the medium of posters in the digital age.

Renowned Japanese designer Shin Matsunaga has created a new poster especially for the exhibition, which explores the design parallels between Japanese and Danish poster traditions.

The multitude of iconic works shows how Japan has positioned itself and developed within international poster culture. The works on display address social tensions and contemporary challenges, while at the same time sending a message of peace.
