Design Education for a Sustainable Future

German Design Museum Foundation

The German Design Museum Foundation promotes design education in schools and across society. It strengthens design literacy and supports schools with programmes and digital resources that help integrate design as a tool for creative and sustainable learning.

With the German Design Museum Foundation (SDDM), we support a non-profit organisation that works nationwide to advance design education and cultural learning. It works nationwide to advance design education and cultural learning. Its focus lies on strengthening design literacy among children, young people and educators. Through programmes such as "entdecke design", digital learning materials and training formats, the foundation presents design as a driver of sustainable development, creativity and transformation.

As part of its educational work, the foundation runs the knowledge platform designwissen.net, develops teaching materials and supports schools in integrating design into their curricula. The Design Networking Hub connects international partners and fosters dialogue on the societal relevance of design.

Design workshops for pupils

The nationwide "discover design" ("entdecke design") workshops strengthen young people’s design competence. They help students understand design as a societal force and support them in turning their own ideas into tangible outcomes.

Training and Teaching Materials

The German Design Museum Foundation supports teachers in integrating design into their teaching. They gain access to practical training and free teaching materials that foster design competence and help embed current topics in a didactically sound way.

Digital Knowledge Platform

The designwissen.net platform provides schools, educators and students with background knowledge, teaching materials and practice-oriented methods to strengthen design competence.

International Networking

The Design Networking Hub connects young designers, architects and creatives worldwide. It enables global exchange, interdisciplinary collaboration and access to international partners.

Historical Photo Collection

The German Design Museum Foundation digitises and catalogues the German Design Council’s historical photo collection. With more than 40,000 image records documenting 20th-century product design, around half of the collection is already accessible via the Deutsche Fotothek and the German Digital Library. It serves as a valuable resource for researchers, educators and the wider public interested in design history.
