Michele De Lucchi Appointed Creative Director of Triennale Milano

With De Lucchi's appointment on 14 July 2026, Triennale Milano has created the role of Creative Director for the first time. Working alongside President Vincenzo Trione and Director General Carla Morogallo, the Italian architect and designer will help define the institution's strategic development over the coming years. His responsibilities also include directing the Museo del Design Italiano, overseeing the development of its collection and future acquisitions.

The new strategy for the 2026–2030 period is centred on annually changing themes that will connect exhibitions, publications, research projects and public programmes. The institution will also relaunch its Centro Studi as an interdisciplinary research centre, supporting preparations for the 25th International Exhibition of Triennale Milano in 2028. In addition, Triennale Milano plans to expand its educational activities through professional development courses and a doctoral programme.

Notably, De Lucchi took a critical stance towards Triennale Milano during his student years and participated in protests against the institution in 1973. More than fifty years later, he now assumes its creative leadership. He describes his vision as a "Laboratory of Vitality", guided by a "Sustainability of the Collective Imagination".

As the new Director of the Museo del Design Italiano, De Lucchi intends to broaden the collection to include more recent periods of design history. At the same time, he aims to place greater emphasis on the ideas and working conditions behind the objects, as well as on the role of craftsmanship as an integral part of Italy's design heritage.
