New Woman, New Vision. Women Photographers of the Bauhaus

News0Exhibition
The Museum of Photography in Berlin is staging an exhibition that shines a spotlight on female Bauhaus photographers and their long-overlooked contribution to the history of photography.

From 17 April to 4 October 2026, the Museum of Photography will host the exhibition ‘New Woman, New Vision: The Bauhaus Women Photographers’. On display will be around 300 photographs from the collection of the Bauhaus-Archiv / Museum für Gestaltung, Berlin. The exhibition focuses on female artists whose subjects are widely recognised, yet whose creators have long gone unnoticed.

Pioneering Women Behind the Camera

Since the early days of photography in the 19th century, numerous female photographers have played a decisive role in shaping the medium. At the Bauhaus, too, they developed new visual languages: they experimented with perspectives, techniques and compositions, broadening the spectrum from portrait and architectural photography to abstract, experimental works. This exhibition pays comprehensive tribute to this body of work for the first time, highlighting the creative breadth and innovative power of the Bauhaus women photographers.

From the Bauhaus to the present day

The historical works are complemented by pieces by female artists from the Institute of Design in Chicago, the Bauhaus’s successor institution in the USA. Furthermore, contemporary works engage in a direct dialogue with the historical pieces: the artists Kalinka Gieseler, Caroline Kynast and Sinta Werner were invited to participate in the exhibition. Their works take up central questions posed by the Bauhaus photographers, reflect on the medium of photography from a contemporary perspective and challenge conventional forms of representation.
