What Do the Designers of Tomorrow Need?

The world of design is undergoing a process of transformation more than ever before. What does this mean for design studies? Whereas work used to be carried out by hand in studios, often in teams, today artificial intelligence is being used as a creative partner whilst working from home. In the podcast, Felix Klingmüller, Professor of Product Design at IU International University of Applied Sciences, discusses design studies of yesterday, today and tomorrow. Together with host Moritz Marder, Klingmüller discusses the impact of AI on the world of design and its potential for methodological teaching.

Key findings:
  • Digital educational resources and AI are replacing traditional textbooks and offer enormous potential for meeting students’ individual needs.
  • Engaging with AI tools is essential for students to prepare for their future careers.
  • The role of model-making is also changing. For students, the key question will be less about how to create high-gloss models, and more about how insights can be gained from prototypes to inform the rest of the process.
