What Role Does Service Design Play in the Circular Economy?

The circular economy is the most comprehensive approach to transforming existing business models in a sustainable way. UX designers are also working to optimise the potential of products through services, as this enables the creation of resource-efficient cycles. In episode 23 of the ndion podcast, industrial designers Moritz Marder and Peter Post, Managing Directors at Scholz & Volkmer, discuss how this can be achieved and the role service design plays in the circular economy.

How we can use products for longer, more intensively and collectively

The sustainable transformation of existing business models is the defining issue of our time. The most consistent approach to this is the circular economy, which has also been set out as an objective in the European Green Deal. UX designers are working to optimise the potential of products through services in such a way that resource-efficient cycles are created. But that’s not all. The circular economy demonstrates that sustainability can make economic sense.

In the ‘Circular Classroom’ pilot, Peter Post explains the levers and opportunities inherent in circular models. He discusses patterns that support sharing models and the need for interdisciplinary collaboration.

You will receive, among other things, fascinating background information on:
  1. Waste prevention, resource conservation, and CO2 and energy savings through the circular economy
  2. There are many practical examples of the circular economy from the German business sector
  3. Legal regulations and incentives can lead to greater sustainability
