What Does the Future of Design Education Look Like?

In this episode, Daniel Rothaug, Professor of Interface Design at the Augsburg University of Applied Sciences, and host Philipp Thesen, Professor of Human-System Interaction at Darmstadt University of Applied Sciences, explore the future of design education. Daniel Rothaug shares his journey from “pixel manager” at Apple, through studying communication design, to founding his own studio for interactive media. A conversation about learning through uncertainty and the immense opportunity to reframe design as a strategic capability.

Key Learnings

Act First, Reflect Later

Design thrives on an exploratory approach where students are not required to know the outcome from the beginning. Openness and a willingness to experiment, prototype, and learn through experience are core skills in design education. Successful careers often emerge from experimentation and the courage to pursue unconventional paths.

Design as a Research-Driven Discipline

Design holds a unique capacity to identify and investigate problems that may be overlooked by other fields. Through design thinking, designers can develop new perspectives and generate meaningful questions. The challenge lies in making these insights transferable to other academic disciplines and in articulating the value of design beyond the artefact.

An Expanded Concept of Prototyping

Every design artefact can be understood as a prototype – regardless of medium. This perspective opens up new possibilities to view design as a dynamic, iterative process. Prototypes are not merely interim results but representations of design concepts that can evolve and adapt across various contexts.
