Erik Spiekermann awarded the Gutenberg Prize 2026

Erik Spiekermann is one of the most influential typographers of our time – and has long been a member of the German Design Council Foundation. He is now to be honoured by the International Gutenberg Society and the City of Mainz with the Gutenberg Prize 2026

The award recognises individuals who have made a decisive contribution to the advancement of the art of printing – artistically, technically or academically. Through works such as FF Meta and ITC Officina, and through wayfinding systems deployed across public spaces, Spiekermann has demonstrated how typography can embody both conviction and function: legible to all, crafted with precision.

Type as Conviction

The jury highlights his commitment to the quality and accessibility of typefaces, as well as his lasting influence on successive generations of type designers. For Spiekermann, type is not a decorative element – it is communication.

The award ceremony will take place on 20 June 2026 at the Kurfürstliches Schloss in Mainz. The laudatory address will be delivered by Karin Schmidt-Friderichs, publisher and former Chair of the German Publishers and Booksellers Association
