Review of 2025
Inspiration, Insight, Impact! The first Circular Design Summit on 11 March at the Hospitalhof Stuttgart made one thing clear: design is key to the transition towards a circular economy. Inspiring keynotes, talks, and panels demonstrated that sustainability and economic growth can go hand in hand. But how do we make this shift happen? The answer lies in innovative business models, interdisciplinary collaboration, and strong policy frameworks.
Key Takeaways:
- Collaboration drives circularity: No company can make the transition alone – cross-industry partnerships are essential.
- Design as a catalyst for sustainable innovation: Products must be designed for circularity from the outset – considering everything from materials to end-of-life reuse.
- Regeneration over reduction: Minimising harm isn’t enough – true innovation creates positive environmental and social impact.
- Policy as an accelerator: New EU regulations are pushing businesses towards sustainability – those that act now will gain a competitive edge.
- Future-proof business models: Sharing, leasing, and recycling ecosystems are gaining traction – proving that circularity is not just sustainable but economically viable.
- Technology & AI as game-changers: Digital tools are making material tracking, supply chains, and circular systems more transparent and efficient.

And he spearheaded the circular transition in his home country Austria when he served as Circular Economy Accelerator for the Austrian Government in 2022.
"As a circular economist, I firmly believe that circular design is the most undervalued ingredient in our transition to a sustainable economy. By integrating principles of reuse, repair, and recyclability from the outset, circular design revolutionizes how we create products and systems. It's not just about recycling; it's about reimagining the entire lifecycle of goods. This approach minimizes waste, conserves resources, and creates economic opportunities. Yet, despite its potential, circular design remains underutilized. Businesses and policymakers often overlook its transformative power, focusing instead on end-of-life solutions. To truly achieve a circular economy, we must prioritize design thinking that considers the full lifecycle impact from the very beginning."
