Film premiere: What Are People For

“What Are People For” – Documentary Film on Design Theorist Patrick Whitney

The new documentary “What Are People For: Design Philosophy by Patrick Whitney” will celebrate its world premiere on 6 June 2026 at Massif E in Frankfurt as part of the “Open – Design Week” of the World Design Capital Frankfurt RheinMain 2026.

The film is directed by internationally renowned filmmaker Gary Hustwit. The opening speech at the premiere will be delivered by Mike Richter, President of the German Design Council (a cooperation partner of WDC).

The 20-minute documentary explores the work and lasting influence of Patrick Whitney, one of the leading pioneers of user-centred and systemic design, who understands design as a tool for social and organisational transformation.

Following the screening, a discussion will take place with Patrick Whitney, director Gary Hustwit, and producer Ashley Lukasik. Admission is free.
